A family's journey in building a 3" scale railroad

Since I was a kid I dreamed about riding the rails. For years I put it off again and again... In 2012 I visited a good friend’s 15" gauge railroad in Northern California.  While there, he convinced me to start my own railroad.

Well, here it is.  Our first locomotive is based on a Porter 0-4-0 affectionately called “Whistling Billy” by the local population.  Whistling Billy operated on the Merced Gold Mining Company claims from 1898 to 1904.  It was abandoned, but later moved to its current home outside the Northern Mariposa County History Center in Coulterville, California.

On our Facebook page, there are a lot of photos of my build up of the engine and rolling stock as well as our home railroad. (Just click on the Facebook link on the right side of this page.)  I will try and keep up as I go to share what I have learned.  It is my hope to inspire others to follow their dreams.
